City Winery Boston presents Sweet Petunia & Mt. Juliet live on Saturday, Feb 15 at 7:30pm.

Sweet Petunia - As a child, Mairead Guy (they/them) was surrounded by Celtic and old-time musicians, learning decades-old songs and spending Thursday afternoons watching their parents play music in Richmond’s local Irish pub. At a similar time, though hundreds of miles away, Maddy Simpson (she/her) was falling asleep to The Essential Simon & Garfunkel in her mom’s car, internalizing the duo’s close harmony vocals and dreaming of making music of her own.

The two met in Boston during college, when they quickly discovered their voices fit together in a way almost familial. Sweet Petunia was born after a few hours of sharing songs and old stories. The name was a no-brainer, taken from a nickname that Mairead’s great-grandfather called all his grandchildren. In no time at all, Simpson and Guy were playing anywhere they could - opening for hardcore bands in Allston basements, taking to the stage of festivals such as FreshGrass (2019) and In Between Days (2023), and most recently touring as much as possible in Mairead’s Honda CRV.

Sweet Petunia, composed of Mairead Guy and Maddy Simpson, is an alt-folk duo based in Boston. Over the last five years, the duo has grown into their own as both powerful songwriters and harmonizers as well as lightning-quick players, beginning every set with explosive double banjo action. Unapologetically queer and unafraid to get loud and angry, they craft music that is informed just as much by their contemporaries in Boston’s punk & DIY scene as it is steeped in rich folk tradition.

Mt. Juliet - A Brooklyn based indie singer-songwriter duo comprised of twins Sami and Reny Petrucci. Their sound combines introspective, nostalgic lyrics, brooding acoustic guitars, and harmonies only genetically similar individuals can produce. Some of Mt. Juliet’s inspirations include: Mitski, Elliot Smith, Boygenius, Big Thief and Pinegrove.

Originally from St. James, NY, the siblings grew up in a musical family and have been playing and studying music for most of their lives. Reny graduated from Berklee College of Music with a BFA in Songwriting, while Sami studied Drama at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Thanks to their shared upbringing, Mt. Juliet’s music offers a unique perspective, exploring their childhoods and the moments of heartbreak they supported each other through. After all, they literally shared a womb.

The twins have been writing and performing together for almost two years, building their fan base at venues like The Cutting Room and Pete's Candy Store in NY. Recently, Mt. Juliet had the privilege of opening for iconic guitarist Andy McKee, performing for packed audiences at City Winery in Chicago and St. Louis.

Sami and Reny released the single "Mirror" in October 2024, accompanied by a music video directed by Mike Leonard. The track features Mt. Juliet's signature moody power chords and harmonies, along with cinematic strings and powerful drums. The duo also partnered with sE Electronics to release an acoustic version of their song "No Opposite." Their upcoming single, "Milan," is set to drop in early 2025, leading up to the release of their debut EP.
